Newlands Corner, near Guildford, Surrey

Newlands Corner is famed as one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Southern England.

It’s a fantastic place for a picnic on a sunny spring day. You can take in the spectacular view over the rolling landscape of the Surrey Hills, with a palette of diverse shades of green in the fields, hedges and woodlands.

But don’t expect peace and quiet at weekends and sunny summer weekdays: it is a very popular destination for Surrey and London day trippers due to its convenient position (on the A25) and amenities: a huge car park, café, visitor centre, picnic facilities and toilets.

Walking
Able-bodied walkers of all abilities have many possibilities for walks, long and short, starting from the car park. Unfortunately these aren’t suitable for “wheelchair walkers” due to their irregular surfaces and slopes.

A short walk for visitors with mobility problems, including wheelchairs, is described on a leaflet available from the visitor centre. The walk starts near the toilet block and follows a semicircle through woodland to return to the car park. I didn’t find it attractive or inspiring. The traffic on the nearby road is an unwelcome distraction. Parts of the path were muddy and difficult for a wheelchair: perhaps it’s easier when dry.

If you want to exercise your lungs while at Newlands Corner, you may welcome and even enjoy this short walk. But there are many other more scenic and more interesting wheelchair walks locally!

Facilities
The public car park has spaces reserved for Blue Badge holders. There is a visitor information centre, a café and a toilet block. The disabled toilets require a RADAR key.

Location
Newlands Corner is on the A25 (Guildford to Dorking). Click HERE to view its location on Streetmap.

Postcode for Satnavs: GU4 8SE. This may not take you to the precise location: it is the postcode used by the nearby coffee shop (The Barn) and hotel (Manor House). The public car park at Newlands Corner is on the opposite side of the A25 road from these businesses and towards Shere/Dorking.

Great views but extremely busy and many visitors don’t venture far from their parked vehicles. The food outlet and loos make this a frequent meeting point for large groups. There is also a large amount of dog mess and “poo bags”. Why on earth do Surrey County Council and Surrey Wildlife Trust want to attract even more visitors? It’s already a bit like a motorway service area!
Visit on a rainy weekday and you might be able to enjoy some tranquility.
The wheelchair route is on the wooded side, so no much in the way of views.
